SESSION: 98 General social network tools vs. collaborative web 2.0 edu platforms

Thursday 8:00 - 9:00 AM
Tim DiScipio, ePals Salon 5 Thursday 8:00 - 9:00 AM Capacity: 400 Significant differences exist between general mass market web 2.0 tools and school-based web 2.0 collaboration platforms, designed for K12 safety and use. Examples and case studies are provided in this important visionary talk directed at school and district leaders. The lead presenter is a pioneer in school web 2.0. The second presenter was ed tech director in Miami-Dade, the nation's fourth largest district. Learn critical questions, issues, perspectives and insights to help you increase student learning through digital collaboration tools designed for K12 use. Deployments of social learning media across an individual school to the International Baccalaureate (140 countries) and New York City (1+ million students) are shared. Student safety and policy management aren’t available in Facebook or other general market tools, so here’s how to use social learning tools. STRAND: Communication and Collaboration AUDIENCE: General Interest TYPE: Concurrent

Other educational tools available...
- gaggle
- schoology
- edmodo

How long will it be until FERPA laws catch-up with schools that are using mass market social networking sites like Facebook and/or Twitter? http://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa/index.html

What are Mass Market social networks NOT good for in Educational settings?
- Safety
- Being on Task
- Easy Access - blocked in many schools
- Students under age 13 - age of consent
- Archives
- Storage
- Give up personal info to future advertisers
- District/School deployment - upload entire school at one time
- Not curricular in function
- require outside 3rd party applications to completed tasks/projects

General Social Network tools...
- Not policy managed or enabled role based permissions
- Usage can easily put students names and schoolwork with teacher comments out on the open web forever
- No support, training, professional development team

What kinds of communication and net skills are students acquiring going from nothing directly to Facebook????
VERY INTERESTING POINT, maybe this would help us teach students the correct way to use these networks in a secure environment when they are under the age of Facebook.

Session Handouts -
http://gaetc2011.wikispaces.com/Joe+Terantino

Is it our responsibility as educators to teach students how to use Social Media appropriately?
What are your view on this??? Throughout this room I am sitting in we are split in thirds... Definitely yes, Definitely NO, on the fence.

Pros -
- engaging
- fast mass communication
- alot of information at your finger tips
- its where they are
- Interactive
- collaborative

Cons -
- Not being used appropriately/student conduct
- student safety/security
- too much exposure
- access - not all students have accounts
- privacy
- permission

Examples of use...
- School Pages - really only to get information out
- Teacher Sites -
- documentation of a project,
- some allow for student responses - a social studies teacher posted a house bill and had students respond what they felt it meant or would do
- photos of math solutions to be posted for students to review, students are able to ask questions about the solution
- Student Centered Work -
- Sample Facebook Pages - created as a character of a book or from history being studied
- Writing Assignments - describe photos they post
- Case Study

Other Ideas of how FaceBook can be used in the classroom -
- Follow new feeds
- share book reviews
- poll your class
- establish pen pals
- keep up with politics
- create groups
- schedule events
- student role playing
- collaborative projects
- start a movement
** All projects must be carefully planned! It is only a tool to be used. No one technology is THE solution.

**Describe a clear policy for student conduct**
He will post his class/school Acceptable Use Policy as an example. Will post on the conference Wikispace along with the SlideShow.
